The Dwyer DebateTeam has become quite successful in recent years. Coach Cindy Robinson spends countless hours in the classroom, afterschool, on the weekends and even in the evening preparing our debaters and attending debate tournaments across the state and country. She acts as teacher, counselor, friend, travel agent, event coordinator, speech reader, editor and chauffeur to the students in her program. Her hard work and dedication paid off when she had a debater advance at Harvard in 2015, three debaters advance at CFL Nationals in 2015 (one of them was 8th in Lincoln Douglas Debate in the nation) and the first ever debater from Dwyer to advance at NSDA nationals and be amongst the top Lincoln Douglas Debaters in the nation. Also, she coached the first student ever to qualify for the Tournament of Champions in 2015- another Dwyer Debate first!
During the 2015-2016 school year, the Dwyer Debate Team attended approximately 18 tournaments including Yale, Harvard, Emory and the University of Florida. Now, the Dwyer Debate Team is preparing for CFL Nationals again (with two of the students who advanced at Nationals in 2015, at Harvard in 2016 and at University of Florida in 2015.) Also, these same two students have qualified and are attending NSDA Nationals (the largest debate tournament in the world). Our Dwyer students were first in the district in their respective events and have shown the hard work and dedication of champions.
Debate is not free. In fact, it is an extremely expensive competitive activity to engage in. Parents send their children to camps every summer to hone their skills, hire private coaches and buy new suits for tournaments to ensure success. Unfortunately, it takes a financial toll on families to pay for airlines, hotels, registration fees and rental cars so that the Dwyer Debate Team can achieve this level of success. Our goal is to alleviate some of the costs for the families that are attending nationals this year. Since there are two national tournaments that we are attending, we can only seek assistance from the district for one tournament. Additionally, by the end of the school year, most of the district funding is exhausted.
The Dwyer Debate Team has had an extremely successful 2016 thus far. Lindsey McNamara qualified for NCFL Nationals in Lincoln Douglas Debate and NSDA Nationals in Lincoln Douglas Debate winning first place in the district at both qualifying tournaments. Emily Minsky qualified for NCFL Nationals in Original Oratory and NSDA Nationals in Original Oratory winning first place at both qualifying tournaments. Katrina Moore qualified for NSDA Nationals in Informative speaking and both Alexa Becker and Shannon Mercante were first alternates in their speech categories.
Additionally, all five of these girls attended the Harvard Speech and Debate Tournament representing Dwyer for the second year in a row. Lindsey brought home a trophy in Lincoln Douglas Debate, Emily brought home a silver platter in Original Oratory and Caroline Downey brought home a trophy in Student Congress.
Other mentions- Lindsey attended Varsity State and received a plaque for advancing in Lincoln Douglas Debate and a Speaker Award for 5th Speaker in the State. Caroline placed 2nd in Student Congress at the PBCFL Novice Championship and Ashley Pierre (not pictured) placed 6th in Lincoln Douglas Debate. At the January PBCFL hosted by Gardens High School, Lindsey placed 1st in Lincoln Douglas Debate and Matthew Rubin placed 6th in Student Congress. Way to go Panthers!!!!
